Job purpose  

The Tax Manager helps drive the success of tax engagements, ensuring high-quality service for our clients. Reporting to the Tax Director, this role manages all aspects of tax compliance, planning, and consulting. The Tax Manager leads a team of tax professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and development to deliver accurate, efficient, and client-focused results.

Duties and responsibilities

As a BELAY Manager, you will professionally represent the company in all virtual and in-person interactions. You are expected to exemplify our mission, vision, and core values daily, fostering a collaborative and positive team environment.

Team Management & Support

  • Supervise and support a team of tax professionals, including senior associates and staff accountants, under the guidance of the Tax Director
  • Manage workloads to ensure team members meet deadlines and deliver accurate work
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, providing constructive feedback and identifying opportunities for professional development

Mentorship, Coaching, & Training

  • Develop and implement training programs to strengthen the technical skills and knowledge of the tax team
  • Serve as a mentor and coach, offering career guidance and support to team members
  • Stay current on tax laws and industry trends, ensuring the team is informed and trained accordingly

Client Service & Relationship Management

  • Assist in managing a portfolio of clients, ensuring timely delivery of tax compliance, planning, and consulting services
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, understanding unique needs and providing tailored tax solutions
  • Collaborate with the Tax Director to identify and pursue opportunities for additional services and business growth with existing clients

Tax Compliance & Technical Expertise

  • Review and assist in the preparation of complex tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts, and tax-exempt organizations
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, identifying opportunities for tax savings and mitigating risks
  • Provide technical expertise and support on complex tax issues and transactions

Process Improvement & Efficiency

  • Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy of tax compliance and reporting
  •  Leverage technology and tools to streamline tax workflows and reduce manual processes
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure integrated service delivery and client satisfaction

Qualifications

This role requires a motivated and trustworthy self-starter with strong communication and technological skills, who thrives independently and as part of a team, and is willing to roll up their sleeves to get the job done! Our ideal manager is flexible, creative, well-organized and will conduct relational and efficient coaching at all times. 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, economics, and/or finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required
  • 7+ years of related experience, with client services
  • At least one year in a managerial role overseeing staff and 2-3 years of tax return review experience including but not limited to PTEs, C-Corporations, Individuals, Trusts, and Not-for-Profit Entities
  • Experience with multi-state entities and foreign owned U.S. based entities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Tax research experience, strong knowledge of the tax code, and proactive problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with small business and startup companies
  • Experience with Thomson Reuters Ultratax 
  • Experience with Quickbooks Online 

Working conditions

BELAY offers full-time remote work, requiring a dedicated, distraction-free home office for standard Monday-Friday business hours, with occasional travel for some roles.
